What you are talking about is definitely available in Notepad++. It’s called Syntax Highlighting. Which language are you looking to style? Many people have already created styles for most languages. For example, in Dreamweaver, my main editor, words such as "if", "else", "switch", "return", etc. are coloured green by default and other keywords like functions are coloured blue. It's able to differentiate between different keywords. Notepad++ just colours them all the same.
